| Sermon notes - Gal 1:1-24 |
[05 Jul 2009|05:49pm] |
Pastor Uth starts a series on Galatians.
Background. The letter to the Galatians is Paul's response to false teaching that was overtaking the church. There were leaders who were denying the freedom in Christ by wanting to add to grace all types of works and man-made laws as being necessary for salvation. The specific group were Jewish converts who insisted that Christians must follow the Mosaic Law, especially the ritual of circumcision.
Galatians is one of the most emotional and impassioned letters from Paul. At times you can almost feel Paul as he wants to reach through the page and shake the Galatians as he stresses his frustration that they would so quickly and easily follow false teachings and nonsense that any work can add to grace.

| Shark Tank ?? |
[05 Jul 2009|05:41pm] |
It appears Disney/ABC is once again importing ideas ...
While doing office work from home today, I had the ABC series "Wipeout" on in the background. (Not much on the TV and I was getting bored of the radio.) Well "Wipeout" is clearly borrowed from the Japanese show "Takahashi's Castle" (known as MXC when edited version of the Japanese show were shown on Spike TV).
Well, it appears in the Fall, ABC is introducing a show called "Shark Tank". This is an Americanization of the British hit show, "Dragon's Den", which had been playing on BBC America. Based on the preview, it does not look like it will be as much fun. Then again, the British series had a couple millionaires who were well liked on the show and became celebrities in their own right. Also, I don't like the title. Why "Shark Tank" for the title? Is that the closest analogy to "Dragon's Den"?

| Sermon notes - Baptism day |
[28 Jun 2009|10:09am] |
There was no sermon today. The service was spent in song and baptisms. I'm guessing about 50+ people were baptized. Next week, the pastor should be starting a series on Galatians.

| Man vs Cartoon | Doctor Who |
[27 Jun 2009|10:51pm] |
Okay. I've got a new favourite TV show.
http://www.trutv.com/shows/man_vs_cartoon/index.html
Watch as a team of the country’s brightest minds takes on the devices and techniques used by Wile E. Coyote in his vain attempts to snare his arch-enemy the Road Runner. See if expertise, years of training and the best equipment that money can buy will be enough to actually make Coyote’s flawed Acme Company machines work.
Also, BBC America had the annual Doctor Who Christmas special, Two Doctors, today. Brilliant! Looks like July is going to feature a number of Doctor Who and Torchwood specials. Sweet!

| The Young Lady's Equestrian Manual |
[27 Jun 2009|03:07pm] |

Another gem from The Project Gutenberg -- The Young Lady's Equestrian Manual
This one will be of interest to my lady friends who are fond of horses.
The book is from 1838. The following pages contain a Treatise on the Art of Riding on Horseback, for Ladies, which originally appeared in the Publishers’ well-known Manual of elegant feminine Recreations, Exercises, and Pursuits, The Young Lady’s Book; with, however, various additions to the Text, and a number of new Illustrations and Embellishments.

| Getting rid of old animation and anime/manga magazines |
[21 Jun 2009|09:11pm] |
The following is for folks in Central Florida ...
I've been doing some house cleaning and have decided to get rid of these old animation and anime/manga magazines.
Magazines include: -- Animation Magazine -- Toon Magazine -- Newtype (Japanese text) -- Mangaphile -- Several early VIZ comic books, such as Ranma 1/2 -- and several other short run animation magazines from the 90's and early 00's -- about three large boxes worth of reading material
I do not expect these to have any value ... other than to animation and anime fans.
So ... If you live in Central Florida and is interested in some _FREE_ magazines and is willing to stop by my house to pick them up (weekend only) and is the first to make arrangements with me then you can have the magazines.

| Sermon notes - Fathers Day, 2 Sam 11-18 |
[21 Jun 2009|12:04pm] |
Pastor Uth leads a Father's Day service. 2 Sam 11-18.
This is the first Father's Day after the pastor's father recently passed away. Talking about memories of fathers. Some of our memories are good, some not so good. Fathers need to learn to look to the Heavenly Father for help, guidance, and example of how to be a father.
David's life is an example of a father's failure. He was a shepherd made king and successful. But, he failed greatly when it came to family matters.
Chap 11 records David's great sin as adulterer and murderer. Chap 12 records the confrontation of David's sin and how the consequences of his sin will destroy his family. Chap 13 records the decay of David's family. One son, Amnon, raped his daughter, Tamar. Another son Absalom murders Amnon. David did nothing. Absalom now turns on David. Absalom sent away, but David stayed quiet. David wanted restored relationship but avoided Absalom. Chap 14 records how David distanced himself from Absalom for a total of 5 years. Absalom finally begs to see David. David remained indifferent. Chap 15 to 18 records a war Absalom waged against David. Finally, Absalom was killed by the leader of David's army. Chap 18 concludes with the pain of David over Absalom's death.
What happened? Too much king, not enough dad. David established peace in the kingdom, it was expanding, the populace loved him. But, he ignored the home-front. When Absalom needed a father's intervention, David was not there. Absalom anger over David's inaction over Tamar's rape grew and grew. Commentators record there is no record of David ever disciplining his children. He did not set any boundaries or enforce consequences.
